The 26,300 pound pintle is the component that centers the whole 300,000 pound rotating OSS mount. It is precision ground to critical tolerances to facilitate strict rotating accuracy as the mount is driven by DC drive motors and centered with a group of large hydro-static bearings during rotation. Large instruments such as this can move so slow in order track stars light years away, that its movement can be undetectable to the human eye! This component is the foundation of the Azimuth motion of the whole mount.
Before laying the pintle in place, we had to break up the cement shop floor and pour a much thicker layer of cement approximately 6 feet thick in order to completely stabilize the floor and eliminate any ground vibration and shifting for the instrument to produce acceptable testing results.
